We are searching for an experienced, collaborative, results driven leader to join our organization in the role of Watershed Sciences Director. The Watershed Sciences Director will oversee the scientific planning, evaluation and reporting of the Province of Alberta’s water quality and quantity monitoring and supportive research programs under the mandate and priorities identified by AEMERA. The Director is responsible for the strategic governance and overall scientific strategy development of the surface and groundwater water quality and quantity programs in AEMERA. The role is also responsible for the supervision of up to 10 scientists from areas including hydrology, hydrometrics, modeling, hydrogeology, hydroclimatology, river and lake and wetland ecology.
The Director is a skilled, innovative and collaborative leader with experience and proven track record in building, leading and managing scientific teams/organizations in a government, academic, or industrial setting to achieve maximum performance. The Director is able to interact effectively with peers and can establish and foster interdisciplinary and collaborative monitoring, research and evaluation to further enhance the intellectual and creative scientific environment of the Agency. The Director is a recognized expert in her/his water-related discipline, who liaises with provincial, national and international academic, government and private sector experts in water sciences to ensure that AEMERA leads and directs an internationally recognized, scientifically credible water program. AEMERA’s mandate requires a strong focus or consideration on Traditional Ecological Knowledge in scientific program design and implementation. The Director must have the ability to adopt this knowledge in the development and design of the Watershed programs.
Qualifications:
- An earned doctorate from an accredited University and a minimum of six (6) years of leadership in an academic position and/or government, industry experience in water science.
- Evidence of scientific expertise and credibility along with evidence of an ability to lead active collaborative research, and demonstration of scholarship through appropriate scientific publication. Expert panel experience is an asset.
- Ability to interpret context and identify implications of environmental issues for AEMERA.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build and develop collaborative relationships and deliver information to senior executives, the scientific community and key stakeholders.
- Innovative and creative thinking as well as strategic and systems thinking skills
- Ability to lead interdisciplinary and multistakeholder teams in strategic, scientific initiatives
- Ability to influence and lead change processes including conflict resolution and mediation skills.
- Portfolio and project management leadership and administration skills.
- Organizational ability including the ability to manage a number of complex issues, projects and priorities while delivering results and achieving outcomes.
- Ability to simultaneously lead and manage a variety of internal and external processes.
