AEMERA is governed by a Board of Directors who through the Chair are responsible to the Minister of Environment and Parks. AEMERA operates within the authority and mandate provided in the Protecting Alberta’s Environment Act. AEMERA's purpose under the Act is to obtain scientific data and information on the environment and make it easily available to the public. In addition, aemera.org is accountable to the Government of Alberta for meeting certain provisions in other Acts and regulations, including among others, the Public Agencies Governance Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Results Based Budgeting Act. AEMERA is not an ‘agent of the Crown’.

The Board of Directors will work as a whole and through the governance and human resources committee and through the finance and audit committee to provide the strategic direction for aemera.org to effectively deliver a new Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting (MER) System in support of Integrated Resource Management System. The Board of Directors will define aemera.org as an organization, by setting the mission and vision to ensure the Agency aligns with the principles of legitimacy, credibility, relevance and operational excellence.

The CEO is accountable to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair. The CEO will lead the daily operations of aemera.org and ensure it achieves its’ goals at the highest operational standards. The CEO has a crucial role in shaping AEMERA by creating a culture of operational excellence and in establishing AEMERA as the source of scientifically sound, accessible and relevant environmental data and information in Alberta.

AEMERA's Board of Directors will hold the CEO accountable for the operational excellence of AEMERA.
