The Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA) is governed by a Board of Directors, who are responsible to the Minister of Environment and Parks. AEMERA operates within the authority and mandate provided by the Protecting Alberta’s Environment Act. AEMERA’s purpose under the Act is to obtain scientific data and information about Alberta’s environment and make it easily available to the public (for more information, please see What We Do).

AEMERA is accountable to the Government of Alberta for meeting certain provisions in other acts and regulations, including among others, the Public Agencies Governance Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Results Based Budgeting Act. However, AEMERA is not an ‘agent of the Crown’, but rather a transparent and independent body committed to providing credible, scientific data and related information on the condition of Alberta’s environment.

AEMERA’s Board of Directors works as a whole through the governance and human resources committee and the finance and audit committee, to provide the strategic direction required to effectively deliver on AEMERA’s mandate. The Board of Directors provides high level guidance for the Agency’s approach and activities, oversees the management of AEMERA’s business and affairs, and assures sound financial management.

Jay Nagendran, President and CEO of AEMERA, is accountable to the Board of Directors through the Board Chair, Mr. Lorne Taylor. Mr. Nagendran leads AEMERA’s daily operations to ensure we are achieving our goals and are functioning to the highest organizational standards. Our CEO has a crucial role in shaping AEMERA by creating a culture of operational excellence and in establishing AEMERA as the source of scientifically sound, accessible and relevant environmental data and information in Alberta.
