In April of 2014, the Government of Alberta enacted the Protecting Alberta’s Environment Act. This act established the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA) as the provincial agency responsible for measuring, assessing and informing the public on the condition of Alberta’s environment.
AEMERA’s mandate is to provide provincial environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting:
- Based on sound science and evidence
- Presented in a timely, open and transparent manner
- And that respects and incorporates community and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) from Alberta’s First Nations and Métis
This includes providing the information necessary to understand cumulative effects, and to inform the public, policy makers, regulators, planners, researchers, communities, and industry.
AEMERA’s primary role is to provide proactive, objective reporting of scientific data and information on the condition of Alberta’s environment, including:
- Baseline environmental monitoring
- Cumulative effects monitoring
- Data evaluation and management
- On-going condition of environment reporting in all regions of Alberta
- Credible data, evaluation, knowledge and reporting to inform policy and regulatory decision-making
AEMERA is also committed to fostering partnerships with other industry, environmental, and regulatory organizations. Along with Alberta Environment and Parks (AE&P), the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), Alberta Energy and Alberta Aboriginal Affairs, AEMERA assists in managing and ensuring a coordinated and effective Integrated Resource Management System (IRMS) on behalf of all Albertans.
AEMERA is currently developing its projects and research to align with key initiatives in Alberta’s environmental monitoring framework. Please see our Activities page for more information about AEMERA’s ongoing environmental work within Alberta.
