Defined as an extended shortage or the prolonged absence of something, drought in Alberta generally refers to low rainfall and a resultant absence of water. Water shortage, and indeed, drought, are no strangers to Alberta. Drought in this region has occurred regularly over the past several hundred years and many experts expect dry conditions in the prairies to continue. In the summer of 2015, several communities in Alberta declared states of ‘agricultural disaster’ due to extreme low rainfall.
