Wetland Scientist

We are passionate about environmental issues affecting the province and we represent a dedicated team made up of individuals and organizations across Alberta seeking to provide open and transparent access to scientific data and information on the condition of the environment.

We are searching for an experienced, collaborative, and results driven Wetlands Scientist to join our interdisciplinary science team to help transform and improve Alberta’s environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting systems. This role provides scientific and technical expertise in the area of Wetland classification (typology), ecology and functions as part of an interdisciplinary scientific team that provides leadership in the delivery of AEMERA’s wetland monitoring and ecosystem health programs.

The ideal candidate must have expertise in the following areas:

  • in one or more areas related to wetland hydrology, biogeochemistry and ecology
  • with wetland vegetation, vertebrate and invertebrate communities
  • application of wetland modelling is preferred

The ideal candidate must demonstrate understanding of the areas below:

  • decomposition of organic matter
  • nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon cycling
  • climate-mediated and anthropogenic landscape changes and wet-dry climate cycles
  • the functions and values of wetlands
  • vegetation and algae dynamics and the interaction of terrestrial and aquatic species

The Wetland Scientist will be expected to:

  • publish relevant articles in peer reviewed scientific journals
  • oversee the planning for wetland monitoring
  • provides expert advice on the establishment of monitoring standards and protocols
  • evaluate and report on the state of wetlands
  • provide expert advice on the cumulative impacts on freshwater ecosystems

Qualifications:

  • PhD graduate in a relevant scientific discipline related to wetland ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of post-doctoral experience or equivalent work experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered as equivalencies.
  • Proven track record in the production of peer-reviewed scientific publications, writing scientific reports, proposals and work plans.
  • Experience or familiarity with analysis of large data sets and/or the evaluation of multisourced wetland derived data.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to develop and deliver presentations to senior executives, key stakeholders, the scientific community and public audiences.
  • Experience in leading or working in multidisciplinary scientific teams; working with partners in academia and industry and government and non-government agencies, etc.
  • Experience in linking different knowledge systems (e.g., western science with indigenous knowledge) is an asset.
