Ice rescue training
First, I am very honoured to be one of 15 students accepted into this Environmental Monitoring Program sponsored by Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF) and the Alberta Environmental Monitoring Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA).
I am a strong believer in keeping the land “Clean, Fresh and Friendly” and am grateful to learn about how we sample and monitor the environment and the equipment that AEMERA uses in its protocols. I have gained a lot of knowledge throughout the five weeks by doing safety certifications, surface water quality monitoring, and wildlife monitoring. It has given me the insight that, as long as I have the equipment, I can do the sampling and monitoring in our area. Safety is always a big component when I am out in the bush for work or in my personal life; so I am glad self-rescue and the other safety courses were included in this training. The one that stands out the most for me was water sampling because I love having the water clean and free from contamination. Plus, my Elders have always been stressing to always respect the water I am surrounded by.
Overall, this training will help me be more proactive in my career goals but I will also use what I have learned for personal reasons. I hope to be self-employed one day and utilize this Environmental Monitoring Technician Training Program.
