Come join the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (AEMERA) Water Monitoring team. AEMERA is an arm’s-length provincial organization responsible for measuring, assessing and informing the public on the condition of Alberta’s environment. The Water Monitoring field staff are responsible for data collection and sampling activities for assessing water quantity and quality, in a number of disciplines, including Meteorological, Hydrometric, Groundwater and Surface Water Quality.
Specializing in one of the above disciplines as a Technologist you will provide technical support for hydrologists or aquatic scientists, and provide input to project-level planning and scheduling. You also will spend a substantial amount of time in the field, including in challenging locations and conditions, to carry out the safe and efficient gathering of samples and data. Reporting to a Water Monitoring Supervisor, you will carry out tasks in the office ensuring data are entered into databases, quality controlled and validated for evaluation purposes. These data will be used for establishing long term trends in water quantity and quality in Alberta, cumulative effects assessment and management, and for state-of-the-environment reporting.
In addition, you will: independently operate specialized vehicles, trailers and equipment; complete site-level hazard assessments and contribute to Safe Work Procedures development; undertake inspections; maintain and preserve the integrity of related field and lab equipment, vehicles, instrumentation and sensors, including performing routine calibrations; be available on standby for response to flood/high water work and other environmental emergencies; pursue on-going work-place training and qualification/certification.
Successful candidates will use their experience and dedicated training based out of one of our office locations, but could find themselves working anywhere in Alberta. Field work will take you from ponds to snow covered mountain tops to obtain samples, collect measurements and maintain our remote monitoring networks that provide data both in ‘near real-time’ and otherwise. Much of the work is in the field, and basic survival skills are necessary to perform physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging work in all environmental conditions over extended periods of time.
Qualifications:
A technical diploma in Biological, Environmental, or Water Sciences, or a related field along with a minimum of four years of related experience including environmental field data collection are required. A combination of education and experience will be considered as equivalencies. Experience with technical software applications, databases, and Microsoft Office is needed in the role. Experience calibrating, maintaining and programming instrumentation, sensors, and data loggers in the applicable discipline is an asset, as is application of occupational health and safety codes or hazard assessments. Membership with a professional or technical association is considered an asset.
Note: A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required to operate large trucks, haul large specialized trailers and operate other specialized vehicles such as ATVs. An up-to-date driver’s abstract will be required if you are selected for an interview. The ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds is required, to ensure safe completion of a variety of physically demanding tasks in the field and warehouse. Our Meteorological and Surface Water Quality teams routinely travel in helicopters, so you must be comfortable with flights and heights.
This position will require you to work outside in adverse weather and road conditions. Successful completion of a defensive driving course is mandatory, and long hours and/or weekend work may become necessary in the field at any time and therefore flexibility is essential.
